Clearing CACHE

Clearing your browser cache and cookies is an important first step for almost any troubleshooting for internet browsing. The ‘cache’ is a tool used by your internet browser to speed up the page loading process. However, sometimes it can cause a problem when websites are updated and developed as files saved in the cache may conflict with what’s actually coded into the website. Clearing cache and cookies is a way we can be sure that any issues you may come across are actually something wrong with the website, rather than inconsistencies caused by using different browsers.

Keyboard Shortcut for Most Browsers

If you are using Internet Explorer, Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox you can quickly clear cache with a keyboard shortcut. While in your browser, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete simultaneously on the keyboard to open the appropriate window.

IMPORTANT:  Close/quit the browser and restart it after clearing the cookies & cache.

Clearing the cache for the current website you’re visiting can help resolve loading or formatting issues and ensure you’re seeing the most up-to-date content. The process varies slightly depending on the browser you’re using. Here’s how to clear the cache for a single website across different browsers:

Google Chrome

  1. Open DevTools: Press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Opt+I on Mac to open Chrome’s Developer Tools. Alternatively, right-click anywhere on the page, and select Inspect.
  2. Open the Application Panel: Click on the Application tab at the top of the DevTools window. If you don’t see it, you might need to click the double arrow (>>) to find it in the dropdown.
  3. Clear Site Data: In the left sidebar, under the Storage section, click on Clear site data. This will clear cached data for the website you’re currently on.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Information Panel: Click on the lock icon in the address bar.
  2. Clear Cookies and Site Data: Click Clear cookies and site data.
  3. Remove: Select the site and click Remove, or click Remove All to clear data for all sites listed.

Safari (Mac)

  1. Open Preferences: With Safari open, go to Safari > Preferences in the menu bar.
  2. Privacy Tab: Click on the Privacy tab.
  3. Manage Website Data: Click on Manage Website Data….
  4. Find and Remove: Search for the website, select it, then click Remove to clear data for that site.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open DevTools: Press F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I to open the Developer Tools.
  2. Network Tab: Go to the Network tab.
  3. Clear Browser Cache: Right-click anywhere under the network tab and select Clear browser cache.

Note

  • Clearing cache for a specific site often clears cookies and other site data, which may log you out of the site or reset your preferences on that site.
  • If you’re trying to clear cache and cookies for all sites and not just a specific one, you can usually find this option in the browser’s settings under “Privacy and security”.
